Britain’s Overlooked History
17th January – 14th February 2022 (Monday evenings), online
A course for Maidenhead branch of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), taught online and open to all. History’s written by the winners but there’s a lot more to history than kings and politicians. For two hours each week, we will explore fascinating and important events that are overlooked, played down or simply forgotten – but which remain relevant to life and society today.
Unarmed and Dangerous: British peace campaigners in the First World War
16th February – 6th April 2022 (Wednesday evenings), online
A course for the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), taught online and open to all. This is a chance to explore stories of people who are often overlooked – and who some would rather forget. We will explore opposition and resistance to World War One, from conscientious objectors who refused to fight to women peace activists who held an international peace congress in the Netherlands, from religious groups that split over the war to soldiers who mutinied. We will focus on Britain, although international comparisons and influences will also be mentioned. We will look at primary sources such as the letters and diaries of those involved, asking what motivated them and what they achieved.
International Conscientious Objectors’ Day
15th May 2022
Around the world, people will be remembering the witness of all who have refused to kill, and standing in solidarity with conscientious objectors who remain in prison around the world today. I’ll be joining with other members of the Peace Pledge Union in attending the national ceremony for the day in Tavistock Square, London.
Around My new book will be published by Pen & Sword. The Peace Protesters: A history of modern-day war resistance looks at peace and anti-war activism in the UK since 1980. More details will be available soon!
